Principal Poets is a writing community where we gather to explore the landscape of words.
We're inspired by deep dives into the best of traditional and contemporary poetry; every week we respond to spark-filled prompts from a variety of poet-teachers.
Our space—a former principal's office—serves the slow craft of poetry. Writing here is a continuous conversation with form, rhythm, and images that demand to be captured in print. Whether we are writing in tight received forms or free-wheeling innovative styles, we celebrate every aesthetic risk and the unique power of each member’s voice.
To keep our creative spirits high, our critiques follow Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA) philosophies, which are famous for radical kindness and support. Amherst writers believe every writer is born with "creative genius." We protect that spark with these principles:
- A Sanctuary for Drafts: We treat all new writing as fiction (not autobiography) to ensure freedom and emotional safety for writers.
- Affirmative Celebration: We focus on what is strong, memorable, and working.
- Shared Adventure: In our non-hierarchical space, there are no "experts"—only a community of equals who write, share, and grow together.
Note: At this time, Principal Writers is a closed group, not accepting new writers.

About the building
Since 2019, the former Willard Elementary School has been the Studio School, a creative hub nurtured by visionary landlord Logan Pajunen. Built in 1924, this space fills our sessions with a sense of history—and an appreciation for vintage original woodwork and tile!
