Folklorik

As a visual artist working in a raw, primitive style, my process is a physical act of unearthing narrative history. The Folklorik collection relies on negative painting techniques. Each piece begins with a colorful, or solid red background that is subsequently overpainted, leaving the foundational underlayers to peek through the negative spaces.
This physical layering mirrors the nature of folklore: our oldest inherited tales are rarely pristine; they are raw, heavily textured, and altered by the generations that passed them down. The heavy, hidden background layers provide a nervous, vibrating energy to the outlined shapes, hinting at the ancient fables and mythic secrets that linger just beneath the surface of our everyday landscapes.
